The church was packed to the rafters. People were getting angry. People were crying and passionate about morals and ideals that are not on their government's radar at all.

A young girl braving a five below Minnesota morning at a street protest in my neighborhood. It was staged in solidarity with the large march on Washington taking place simultaneously. I later read that seven U.S. soldiers died in the Iraq meatgrinder that same morning.

Called man on verge of collapse 2006, the man actually has collapsed many times. I'd guess he falls down at least every other day. Lori and I have both become pretty good at getting him back his balance, but his legs aren't as straight as they once were. All those falls add up. The sweet irony being that this makes the title truer and truer every time you read it. Like when you read the news.

Both pieces of art in the photo are by Karl Noyes.

This is Roger last Summer standing gaurd at Hidden Beach. All Roger did there was sit in a folding chair drinking and watching for cops. As Head of Security, he knew just where to sit so that he could see clear to the road through 200 yards of forest. "Watching the vortex," he explained with a wry smile. Yellow and red alerts would be called from time to time. As I rarely drink I had no need for his services, but I appreciated them nonetheless. He often wore a yellow SECURITY shirt he'd found at a concert, he said it made everyone feel safer.

In the picture he's smiling but it comes off as fear. The hand thumbing his nose at the authorities could also be a gesture for "flask." The smile, the fear, the definace, the flask. All are genuine Roger.

She painted Katy's feet too that night.

Katy on the day she and Karl moved out of my apartment last August. She moved a few blocks and we stayed close and jammed whenever we could. Yesterday was her going away party. Now she's moving to stay with her family in Milwaukee. Some losses are hard to quantify.

This is an older photo - taken back in February almost a year ago when I was rooming with Lori and her sister. I especially like this picture turned sideways.

Mel, tired, hanging out with Lori and I in Caledonia.

Protest art sitting around Seward Cafe's back patio. A rather striking likeness, don't you think.
