04.29 Caught Deb all atwirl to The Lifters.

04.28 Allie Kral plays fiddle like a madwoman and sings for Cornmeal, a Chicago-based bluegrass band. Their music ranges from traditional bluegrass to damn trippy freeform jams, such as the one that extends this song:

04.27 Amanda's very proud of this unique skill. "Try it. Bet you can't do it," she taunts me. Then I show her the photo and she goes "Ahhh! It looks like I'm Yoda!" And you know, if you pretend that her tongue is a mustache and stare at it for a second, she right. It kind of does.

04.26 Sunday found me out in the field flying an "extreme" skateboarder kite with my sons (the perfect thing to do after a bowl of their "extreme" breakfast cereal). The wind was about ten miles an hour short of an extreme time, but still we enjoyed trying. Later, Deb noticed that the shadow of the kite in this photo resembles a couple dancing. I couldn't see it until she said that the woman is wearing a dress and is being flipped head over heels. She's right. It kind of does.

04.25 Cornmeal is a Chicago jamgrass band with an enormous amount of passion and talent. This was taken at House of Rock in Eu Claire, Wisconsin a day after I met them.

04.24 I came home and found this whiteboard propped on the stove and asked her about it the next morning. She told me it was a work in progress, saying it was "a consiliated body of thought, education and experience-to-date that is the babybrain of a new approach to art and live that I call essence art."
"Art and live?" I asked, perplexed.
"Yeah," she said, lighting up. "You know... Live!"

04.23 Backstage at the Cabooze last night Erik Berry had the inventive idea of allowing the audience to bet on what song they'll open with. "We'd bet too," he continued gleefully. "We could totally clean up!"

04.22 Trying to meet Michal Daniel's challenge to submit to Street Salon on the theme of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (his submission is beautiful), I made this picture of Johnny Love taking a poor man's vacation on Hidden Beach.

04.19 When I visited Michal Daniel's 640x480.net Sunday morning, I saw a familiar door. This is a door to the building where THIS web site is hosted. Mildly freaked at the coincidence, I fired off an email to him asking if he was from Minneapolis, or perhaps had just visited. He replied that he's a local and that perhaps we should get together for beers, which we did the following day.
Michal's recent street work is quite unique. Instead of shooting with either of the two super kickass Canon DSLs he uses in his professional life, on the street he shoots with the most rinky-dink digital camera I know of: an eyemodule PDA camera. And to devastating effect:

04.18 I was at the mall and ran this guy I recognized from a photo I took at the Triple Rock a couple weeks ago. Turns out he drums for a band called Cataclysms Eve.

04.17 Love and laughter on a Saturday afternoon. We care a lot about each other even though we know we don't make sense as a couple. This is the most gradual loving release from a relationship I've ever experienced. It'll be hard to finally leave.

04.16 My son Joey dropped by for a visit earlier this week sporting blindingly white new shoes and rapid fire raps.

04.15 Connie Minowa is a Minnesota artist who often paints live onstage during Cloud Cult concerts. A gallery of her work can be viewed at Myritual.

04.14 Debora uses her closet as a makeshift soundbooth and pratices vocals, sometimes for hours, in pursuit of her dreams. I wish for her the very best.

04.13 SpongeBob girl thinking SpongeBob thoughts. Lexi's pennies slid off and rolled all over the van an instant later.

04.12 Hondo and Nick are The White Iron Band's double-threat stage right. Besides being excellent on keys, both can (and do) sing very very well. This is one thing that's sorely lacking in today's music: large bands with multiple lead singers (remember Fleetwood Mac? The Eagles?). The White Iron Band has four of them.

04.11 "Think I'm gonna take a flat-iron to him," he said. I told him he shouldn't, carefully explained all the reasons why and gave him better alternatives. He listened through an alcoholic fog and then reasoned in favor of the flat-iron on the grounds that he's not afraid of prison, having already done that trip.
"She'll hate you for it. I know he beats her, but she's probably in love with him. You need to talk with her. Convince her to get help or leave." He hadn't thought of that and he became deeply conflicted. I had to go and took this one unposed photo.

04.10 Heading out of downtown Friday with Nick, we passed three guys holding a vigil outside of Sexworld. We sat at the red light on the corner and listened to the soft sound of their hymns. We moved on but a couple blocks later I decided to go back with my camera. When I arrived, another street photographer was there taking pictures. A cabbie named Christian, and if he reads this I encourage him to get in touch with me. I was very pleased to meet him.

04.09 The sobs of the mugging victim did not merit so much as a glance from either Cool Denim Barbie or Pink Summer Barbie.

04.08 For some reason, this photograph reminds me of this one.

04.06 I don't often post self-portraits, but was prompted to do so by the beautiful photograph Ian Kennedy posted of himself yesterday at fiftymillimeter. A good portrait should provide some insight into the life and character of the subject. Self-portraits are no different, and I think both of our shots reveal some things. Unfortuantely, these two shots also reveal that Ian has a far better camera than I do (lucky bastard, heh).
For those curious, the band down on the stage is Concentual.

04.05 The classic punker doo fucking up the view at the Triple Rock Sunday night.

04.04 Guitarist Josh Lynch is a good friend of mine going back to the late 90s when we made web sites together. By 2003 his band The Framed was going strong and I designed a cover for their 4-track vinyl ep The Great Rock and Roll Rip-Off. Yesterday I finally got to see them play. For a taste of great Minneapolis street punk, check out "The Way It Is," from their new album Countless Ways of Self Destruction:

04.03 This was taken from the balcony at a Concentual show. The previous song had been a gentle ballad, and this couple continued to slowdance during a cover of The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give it Away."

04.01 Described by Alan Sparhawk as "one of the greatest musicians and human beings I know," Charlie Parr gives original and traditional folk and Piedmont-style blues incredible gravity. I recently shot some video of him performing at the Kitty Cat Klub in Dinkytown. The setting was not well lit, so the video is darker than I'd've liked -but perhaps this is fitting for a song so rife with death:
Video: Possessed by the Devil (32mb qt mov)
Please right-click and download the movie to your hard drive instead of streaming it into your browser. This is much easier on the server. Thanks.
