Another shot from the Low show at Lucé last month. The little monitor in the corner is the flip-out screen on Marc Gartman's video camera. He was standing next to me during the show and I waited for him to train his camera on bassist Zak Sally so that I could get all three of them in the shot.

The title has a double meaning.

I'm told the Laughingman never speaks. He sits at the bar, harmless, and drinks his beer laughing to whoever is sitting nearby. He does this every few minutes. At first you think it's a greeting, and perhaps it is. But then five minutes later he does it again with that wide toothless grin and eyes that firmly believe you're in on the joke with him. You smile back kindly and rush to ignore him. I made a picture of the fourth laugh he gave me, an act which amused him greatly, before retiring from the bar as if worried that his madness could be caught like a cold.

Little Peter Z at church last Sunday accused me of being a "screeky little mouse" again. I countered that he was a "hephalump." He considered this for a moment and then declared "You... are a man named Bob." I had no comeback to that.

He wins this round.

Dave and Timmy and Lionel Richie's autograph at Dirty Old Town Studio in Duluth. Taken during Trampled by Turtles' recording sessions at the end of December.

Fast, tight, and relentless. The Keep Aways' sound is like a mad cross between Joan Jett and The Gits. I got permission from drummer Shanna Willie to post a song from their upcoming CD here so you can hear what I mean. Enjoy:

Song: File it Away (3.4mb mp3)

Shanna says the CD will be out "soon." Other photos of The Keep Aways are posted here, here, here, here, here, here and here.

Sometimes photography is picking something mundane, like a shadow on the floor, and figuring out what isn't boring about it.

01.23
Out in the woods a couple days ago and pointed my camera at this snowy thicket and "orbited" it, sort of. At a certain point in the elipse everything seemed to burst from the center.

01.22
Right after I took this shot, Timmy (nearest) asks me "did you just take a picture?"
"Yes," I answered.
"Was I in it?"
"Yes," I said again.
"I looked," he admitted sheepishly.

It's finally warmed up enough to take the camera outside without damaging it. Big fat snowflakes kept getting on the lens. So pretty out. This shot is digital, but I took an identical one with film. The good stuff too. I had about eight shots left of Ilford FP4+ left in the Minolta. Blew them all on the pasture and the snow.

Pulled this from the archive. Might be because I was reading this an hour earlier.

01.19
A shot from Shippie's basement party a couple nights ago.

My dad's trailer after a snowfall. Photographed last winter.

01.17
Found this shot of Johnny yesterday while sifting through my archive. Taken last Easter in my backyard on the same day as this photo.

The pissing Calvin sticker might be my least favorite one ever. The most hackneyed cliche of the the NASCAR crowd. Well, that and "No Fear" (places finger down throat). But the irony here was irresistable.

01.15
Taken in early Spring of last year while walking on the edge of the lake. It was still pretty much frozen solid, and the first warm day made it fog the air.

01.14
Taken at a Words to Film Score show at Lucé a couple Tuesdays ago in Duluth.

01.13
Dave Simonett taken on New Year's Eve, posted today mostly to annoy Maria. I love her, but she was a bit of a snot yesterday. She deserves it and she knows why. The Grateful Deadness on the board was drawn long ago by Dave Carroll.

01.12
A shot of Shanna playing drums last Summer.

Update: 5uxOrz! The Keep Aways site got hacked!

This was taken on the bridge above where 394 enters downtown Minneapolis.

I got tired of seeing my face at the top of this page (as did you, no doubt). So I've replaced it with something I could stare at all day. Ahhhhh... Cameras... Though I should note that my pile of cameras would be nothing were it not for the generosity of a certain Christian McShane, who supplied me with most of the vintage pieces and also the black Yachica SLR with the insane 28-210mm zoom lens. I tried to repay him with my old iPod and he gave that away too: to his girlfriend Angel, who promptly filled it with Depeche Mode.

If you're curious about the pile of gear at the top of the page, have a closer look.

If you've never taken the time to listen to Low, you've skipped one of the most important musical acts of the last decade. The first thing that drew me into this band was percussionist Mimi Parker. She has one of the most devastatingly beautiful singing voices I've ever heard.

This photo was taken at Banjo Dave's during a rehearsal/interview session on New Year's Eve.

Attention Turtleheads: I shot some video as they were practicing a cover of Widespread Panic's Ain't Life Grand. Keep in mind, I'm not a videographer and do not posess the correct tools to do it right. It was an impromptu sort of thing. The video was shot with my Sony F-717 which unfortunately does not make a separate audio track in the MPEG file it creates, consequently compressing it results in a silent film. So since the sound is important I can only post the raw footage from the camera which is 45MB. Huge, I know. But if you want to see it, here it is. Update: The files size has since been reduced. Enjoy:

High Quality: Ain't Life Grand (12.4mb qt mov)
Low Quality: Ain't Life Grand (1.7mb qt mov)

Please right-click and download the movie to your hard drive instead of streaming it into your browser. This is much easier on the server. Thanks.

Second night at the Red Carpet, this time for Trampled by Turtles and Fourty Watt Bulb.

01.06
I was hired today by the Minneapolis band Concentual to shoot a few shows for them. This was taken earlier tonight at the Red Carpet in St. Cloud.

01.05
Trampled by Turtles leaving the studio after two days of recording sessions. The new album is basically finished and will be released in March. These guys play like Swiss clockwork and the new songs are excellent.

01.04
Banjo Dave and Baley singing in the living room with Ricky Scaggs' version of Walls of Time cranked up on the stereo.

01.03
Low performing at Lucé last Tuesday night in Duluth.

01.02
Snowed in today in Duluth. Couldn't get home. Didn't want to leave anyway. So happy here.

01.01
I've been away from the internet for a few days in Duluth with Trampled by Turtles as they record their second album.
