12.26 Trampled by Turtles sitting for an interview backstage at the Norshor Theatre in Duluth. They go into the studio to record their next album next Wednesday and have invited me to photograph the sessions, so I'll be posting from Duluth next week for a few days.

12.25 Merry Christmas!

12.24 This is the place where my Mom gets her hair done in Isanti.
I discovered the funnest thing today. If you have two SLR cameras with 28mm lenses, focus them to the same distance and look through both of them at the same time; one camera for each eye. You'll need to turn them sideways to do this. If you're doing it right you should have a hotshoe touching each side of your nose. You'll see the focusing circles of each viewfinder, aim the cameras so that they are aligned on eachother and viola! Wide-angle 3D stereovision! Now walk around the house that way.

12.23 This is another diorama from the Diorama-rama at the MAC in Duluth. Concealed under a black curtain, you had to poke your head in and inside was an old Victrola turntable skipping on the same groove with little boats and astronauts whirling on the vinyl under a strobelight. Trippy.

12.18 Taken on the same walk during which I met Hard Luck Santa. I-94 as seen from below at the end of the long walking bridge that connects the Warehouse District to downtown Minneapolis.

12.17 This was taken back in September, shortly after my time on Madeline Island. I've realized that I like shooting fields because I like the freedom implied by wide open spaces. It's for the same reason I choose to live out here in the sticks.

12.16 Angel, this hot girl I met at the Diorama-rama at the MAC wanted me to take a picture of her "Depeche Mode box." So I did. Nice box.

12.15 A straight-up "band photo" of The Dukes of Hubbard. They are (from left to right) Eric Pollard, Michael Gomez, Russ Sackett, Tim Saxhaug and Jim Cooper. While we were not intending to do a sendup of Queen's Boheimian Rhapsody video, we appear to have done just that.

12.09 Sorry about the late post. Had a long night. This was taken during the God Johnson show at the Cabooze.

12.08 I met this guy last month on the day my girlfriend dumped me, just a lively old man in a shiny red truck overflowing with his possessions. I asked him if I could photograph him and he introduced himself as the Reverend John Hollander, candidate for Governer and protector of animals. After a brief lesson on why we gotta fight them terrorists over there instead of over here, I stepped back to take the shot. Seeing this he asks "do you want me to put on the Santa hat?" Hell yeah, I tell him.

12.07 This photograph is similar to the shot of Steve Rohem (posted back on the 2nd) in that this subject was also bathed in red light - this time from above instead of a flash. The mask was uncovered by remixing the channels of the original photograph.

12.06 Taken Saturday on Hennepin Avenue downtown (Minneapolis).

12.05 This shot taken by my brother Dan's fiance, Leah, pretty much sums up Minnesota.

12.04 Little Peter Z. is fun, especially now that he's old enough to talk. The banter in the truck went something like this:
Peter: "You're a wacoon!"
Me: "YOU're a racoon!"
Peter: "No I'm not! You're a skreeky mouse!"
Me: "YOU're a squeaky mouse!"
Peter: "No I'm not! You're a fuzzy old bear!"
Me: "I'm a WHAT?!"
Peter: (laughs)
Things quiet down for a moment, so I tap on the back of his head and quickly look away, innocent.
Peter: (whirls around) "Who poking me?"
When he faces forward I do it again and photograph his reaction.

12.03 This was a nighttime experiment I did back in August. Sorta Pink Floydish, though not intentionally.
Been debating this for the last week and having just crossed the one year mark, it seems like the right time. I've decided to rename this site to simply Joe Cunningham's Photo Journal because... um, that's what it is.

12.02 This shot of Steve Roehm came about strangely. I keep a pair of red/blue 3-D glasses in my backpack because, well... you know. Just in case. Anyhow, sometimes I experiment with them by placing one lens or the other in front of my camera's little flash unit. The blue lens makes for a surreal flash while the red lens pretty much just turns the photo red. I never liked the red effect but tonight I discovered that if I remix the red and green channels of these photos in grey mode, a really great black and white photo lies inside them. Compare the unremixed Steve Roehn with today's post.
